When I was little I shared a bedroom with my sister who is 7 years older than me. I struggled with keeping things tidy; she was all about minimalism before it was cool. I am not sure at what age, I think about 6 years old – she “taught” me how to clean. For the final presentation of my cleaning skills she called me parents in to watch as she proceeded to toss everything on the ground and tell me “Ready, Set, Clean!” I have lamented cleaning ever sense…
Now, even though I don’t like to clean, I really like things being clean. So I do it, and sometimes I hire help… WE CAN’T DO IT ALL PEOPLE!
None of that actually gets me to my point – bummer. I mainly talk about food and movement, but today I am talking about cleaning, and actually with most of my clients and in all my workshops I bring up cleaning, why? Because WHAT you clean with truly makes a difference in your health. I can talk to you about choosing all the organic food in the world, but if you are still actively washing your body, your floors, your clothes, your sheets, etc. in highly toxic chemicals – your body is going to be more taxed than it needs to be.
I work with many women wanting to get pregnant or are currently pregnant and so keeping industrial chemicals down to a minimum is very important to me.
“In a study spearheaded by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) in collaboration with Commonweal, researchers at two major laboratories found an average of 200 industrial chemicals and pollutants in umbilical cord blood from 10 babies born in August and September of 2004 in U.S. hospitals.” (ewg)
“Children born to women who held cleaning jobs while pregnant have an elevated risk of birth defects, according to a 2010 study by the New York State Department of Health.” (ewg)
Cleaning supplies have also been found to contain carcinogens, the most common:
- Formaldehyde (in products such as, Pine-sol, Comet, and Simple Green)
- 1,4 Dioxane (in many name brand laundry detergents)
That’s a lot of chemicals and a lot at stake!! It can make you go a little crazy, but I try and rest that I CAN do some things about it, but I can’t fix the problem. We are going to be exposed to chemicals – I just want to do what I can to limit them.
Ever sense I have been out of college, cleaning my own place, I have made a point to buy “green” products. I have attempted to be as fragrance free as possible with cleaning products, but I know that companies can lie about ingredients, and do. This was one of my number one take aways from college – companies can pay a fee to lie on their marketing. I am a skeptic – always.
This is why I love Norwex. I clean my entire house with their cloths and water.
Yep, thats it. I use about 2 cloths, 1 duster mitt, 1 bathroom mitt, 1 mop + pad, and 2 window cloths… oh yeah, I do use “Seventh Generation” toilet bowl cleaner. Since June the only cleaning product I have bought has been laundry detergent… and I do not plan on buying any products anytime soon, except toilet bowl cleaner and laundry detergent.
Here are the exact products I clean my entire house with:
– 1 for kitchen + living spaces
– 1 for my 2 bathrooms
– 1 for my glass and stainless steal in my kitchen + living spaces
– 1 for bathroom shower door and stainless steal
– This is the one product I feel like I could clean without, but it works so well in my shower, that I am really glad I have it!
And to clean myself, my body? My husband and I have both totally switched to using Norwex Body Cloths – and we have been for months! If you know me at all you know I am a fitness trainer and I also workout a lot… meaning, I get stinky, and the cloths really work.
I am also super pumped to try and use these body cloths for our baby coming in November, which would save us SO much money on baby wash!
My dear sister-in-law, Maggie is hosting a virtual party for Norwex right now. When you click on any of the links above, or go HERE, you will be prompted on whether this is for a part or not… the answer is YES and click on the party that says “Maggie Lightner.” If you have any questions please send me an email or if you have my number – give me a call and I can help walk you through what might be the best choices for you!
